Department Summary:
MITRE’s Human Language Technology (HLT) Department works across the full range of US Government agencies to provide language processing solutions to address complex mission needs for our sponsors. Our work provides opportunities to apply language processing solutions to real-world challenges and to research and prototype new methods to address mission needs. We are looking for highly motivated, adaptive, and self-directed candidates to perform research, development, engineering, evaluation, and integration in the field of natural language processing capabilities. We are looking for expertise in areas such as computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine translation, speech processing, information extraction, knowledge base population, cross-language information retrieval, identity matching and other areas of human language technology.
Job Responsibilities:
The position involves researching, developing, evaluating, and integrating Generative AI capabilities. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Develop new, impactful work opportunities for staff in the area of Generative AI, especially in Large Language Model technology in collaboration with MITRE portfolios and business units.
- Work in and provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams to develop and implement Artificial Intelligence and Human Language Technology capabilities that leverage cutting-edge advancements in Generative AI.
- Identify new opportunities for adoption of Generative AI capabilities across MITRE’s sponsor base and lead successful execution of efforts designed to increase adoption of Generative AI technology across different sponsor mission sets.
- Ensure the technical strength of MITRE’s Generative AI work programs, by shaping its content, participating in quality reviews, and bringing an expert’s perspective that reflects knowledge of the state of the art in Generative AI and Large Language Model technology.
- Provide leadership within MITRE’s internal Research & Development (R&D) program by developing and shaping new initiatives that lead to the development of novel capabilities that make unique contributions to sponsor missions across different domains such as defense, health care and homeland security.
- Lead and shape new efforts to rigorously evaluate the utility and impact of Generative AI solutions across MITRE’s sponsor base.
- Convey complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences alike through briefings, TEMs, presentations and/or white papers.
- Coordinate technical outreach to industry, academia, and other stakeholders, ensuring that best practices and technologies are brought to bear on our work programs and deliverables.
Required Qualifications:
- World-class technical expertise and recognition in Generative AI and Natural Language Processing, especially in Large Language Models
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, computational linguistics, or related disciplines
- 15+ years of impactful work experience in Artificial Intelligence and Human Language Technology
- Ability to exert meaningful influence over strategic decisions in complex, multi-stakeholder, and collaborative environments.
- Demonstrated experience in prototyping/development of human language technology components/systems, including systems that leverage recent Generative AI and Large Language Model capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to apply state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to real-world problems.
- In-depth understanding of state of the art and best practices in Generative AI technology, and comprehension of MITRE and key external communities.
- Experience with programming languages such as Java or Python.
- Ability to work independently to learn new technologies, methods, processes, frameworks/platforms, and systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to successfully articulate challenging technical concepts to both lay and expert audiences
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, computational linguistics, or related disciplines
- Track-record of successful deployment of HLT systems or components that have been used by customers or stakeholders outside of a lab/experimental setting
- Active DOD security clearance
