    Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

    The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security ( ARLIS ) - a University Affiliated Research Center ( UARC ) under the UMD Vice President for Research ( VPR ) is a growing organization with a core mission to support the government’s security and intelligence communities. ARLIS aims to integrate social and behavioral sciences, AI, and computing for new Human Domain applied research and development capabilities.

    ARLIS seeks to hire an Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) Scientist. Exceptional candidates in all areas related to the ARLIS’s current research trajectories will be given serious consideration, particularly those with experience in multiple areas.

    As an AI/ML Scientist, you will be part of up to two or three project teams, and your activities may include:

    Seeking practical AI/ML-based solutions built on technologies including natural language processing and translation, knowledge representation and reasoning with evidence, learning, automated ontology/taxonomy creation, or 3D synthetic data generation and refinement. Utilizing statistical analysis, unsupervised machine learning, supervised machine learning, and deep learning, as needed. Building models and simulations to describe data, predict events, and inform a course of action. Supporting test and evaluation as well as validation and verification efforts, by developing a "test harness" to support systematic evaluation of machine learning frameworks using evaluation data sets. Strengthening the interdisciplinary and sociotechnical considerations being applied to the design, development, test, and evaluation of human-machine interfaces (to include augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR)), human-systems integration, and augmentation of human performance. Apply sound engineering and computer science principles to design, build, and test systems in support of multidisciplinary research projects Collaborate closely as a member of interdisciplinary research teams Develop and understand research goals Identify and define concrete machine learning tasks and solutions when presented with broader customer needs Take initiative to solve problems, fix critical errors, and raise important issues to appropriate level Work as part of a multi-disciplinary opportunity capture team in a matrixed organization with a collaborative and a team-centric culture.

    This is a full-time professional track ( PTK ) faculty position at the University of Maryland with benefits. Salary is dependent on experience, qualifications, and hiring level. The preferred start date is as soon as possible.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree or higher in computer engineering, computer science, engineering, or information technology. Equivalent demonstrated experience will also be considered.

    Experience:

    Have 5+ years of experience (2+ years of experience if Masters or Doctoral degree) in the machine learning and data science fields; OR completed and have a strong interest in linear algebra, calculus, statistics, probability, or related coursework.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Proficient in at least one of Python, Java, C++, C, R, or similar - including experience with command line scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell). Experience working with ML frameworks, libraries, and packages (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, OpenCV, pandas, or spaCy). Experience with git for version control. Experience with data parsing and processing of complex hierarchical data formats (e.g., JSON , XML ). Demonstrated ability to translate mathematical concepts into well-documented and efficient code. Have excellent time management skills. Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills. Able to obtain and maintain a US Top Secret/ SCI level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information.

    Preferences:
    Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field. 3+ years of experience in designing and implementing algorithms in an AI/ML or adjacent field. Have experience using high-performance computing structures like GPUs and CPU clusters. Have experience working on machine learning and AI development on secure, classified networks and systems. Experience working on projects developing simulation- based test and evaluation tools. Experience in an interdisciplinary research environment, especially running experiments. Experience with independently setting up development environments (including back-end pieces). Experience with front-end user interface and dashboard development, testing, and evaluation. Experience with SQL /NoSQL/Graph Databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, GraphQL, Neo4j, MongoDB). Experience in designing and implementing algorithms involving one or multiple of approaches such as AI explainability, stochastic processes, classification, clustering, deep learning. Program and project management expertise. Willingness to travel. Active TS with SCI eligibility.
